Our goal is to expand physical activity programs for cancer patients and survivors

Advances in cancer treatment have led to improved survival rates. Cancer treatments, however, have severe immediate and long-term side effects that impact patients and survivors’ health and quality of life. A growing body of research, to which the Health & Wellness Lab is at the forefront, demonstrates that physical activity is physically and psychologically beneficial at all stages of the cancer journey. Physical activity, including exercise and yoga, improves fatigue, sleep, depression, cardiovascular fitness, bone strength, muscle loss, as well as overall physical functioning and quality of life.

The challenges facing cancer patients and survivors highlight the importance of ‘life after cancer’ and the need to provide supportive services to enhance their health and daily lives. Researchers, clinicians and health professionals can support patients and survivors through therapeutic physical activity programs tailored to all stages of cancer diagnosis.

The Thrive Centre is a community program that evolved out of research on the benefits of physical activity during and after cancer treatment. Our goal to raise support that enable Thrive to grow and offer more programs that benefit people affected by cancer.
